Jalandhar is the north-western city in Punjab. The oldest city of Punjab has seen very fast development and urbanization and has become a high industrial centre. The city was earlier known as Prasthala during the period of Mahabharata. And During the British era, it was known as Jullundur.

HOW TO REACH

By Air:-
The nearest airport is Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar, located about 75 km (47 mi) north-west of Jalandhar. The airport is connected to other parts of the country by regular flights. Several airlines operate flights from abroad, including Birmingham, Dubai and Doha. The airport now handles as many as forty-eight (48) flights every week up from the occasional, intermittent ones some years ago.

By the Rail:-
Jalandhar City railway station is on the Delhi-Amritsar Railway line. It is connected with direct trains to Delhi, 375 km (233 mi),Garib rath, Calcutta, Mumbai, Puri, Nagpur, Jammu Tawi and Deluxe Express to Mumbai, Shatabadi Express to Delhi, Utkal Express to Puri and Howrah Mail to Calcutta.

By Road:-
There is a large network of bus services of Punjab, Himachal, Delhi, Haryana, Pepsu, Chandigarh, U.P., Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan State Roadways, apart from private operators.

 

WHAT TO SEE

Devi Talab Mandir:-

it is located about one km from the railway station. The old Devi Talab has been renovated and in its centre, a new temple has been built. Recently a model of Amarnath Yatra has been built in the premises. An old temple of goddess Kali also stands by the side of the Devi Talab. The gilded Mandir is famous for the ‘Hariballabh Sangeet Sammelan’ held every year in December at its precincts for the past 125 years

 

 

 

Sodal Mandir :-

Thousands of devotees throng this temple during ‘Anand Chaturdashi’ in September. The child Deity here is believed to grant wishes of devotees .

 

 

 

 

 

Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Museum, Khatkar Kalan:-

A museum at Khatkal Kalan, the native village of the great Martyr Sardar Bhagat Singh, was inaugurated on his 50th death anniversary. It was earlier in Jalandhar district, now became part of Nawanshahr district. To pay homage to the great revolutionary martyrs of the Punjab , who laid down their lives for the liberation of their motherland, all their memorable belongings are displayed here.

 

 

Company Bagh:-

Known as Nehru Garden, near Nehru Garden Chowk, used to be a place where people used to sit in the evening & enjoy the lush green lawns, especially in the evening during summer days to stay away from the scorching heat. Company Bagh ( East India Company ), Queen’s Garden ( after 1858 ) and Nehru Garden ( after Independence ) Company Bagh’s shady trees have been replaced by various cemented structures now.

 

 

Niku Park:-

Once had a lovely ambiance long time ago has regained its stature as cheap nature garden or a mini amusment park. For a nearly Rs2/- per person as entry fee (also Rs2/- for scooter parking, if you would want to park it inside) you will enjoy large open space, some beautiful fountains, candy/popcorn stall, five or six rides like cups and saucers, roller coaster etc, children’s train, caterpillar etc (Rs10/- per ride/popcorn/candy). It is easily accessible, being in one of the most active colonies of Jalandhar-Model Town.

 

 

Rangla Punjab Haveli:-

A traditional Punjabi village themed resort. Haveli, a traditional Punjabi restaurant on the G.T. Road, Jalandhar-Phagwara Highway, a wayside eating resort off Jalandhar.The resort that came up a few years ago, close to the popular Lucky Dhaba, has clicked like anything. It offers the ambience of a lost Punjabi village with a truck interior very much a part of the interior and waiters togged in tehmat-kurtas and phulkari jackets.

 

 

St Mary’s Cathedral Church ( Jalandhar Cantt):-

The old church dedicated to St. Patrick was built by Rev. Fr. John Macodnnel, Q.F.M.CAP of the Vicariate Apostolic of Agra, in 1947 at the same site of new church since 1886. It was looked after by various chaplains appointed to Jalandhar from the Diocese of Lahore.

 

 

 

Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi:-

Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs visited the city of Jalandhar during his tour of Doaba area. Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi in Basti Shaikh, Jalandhar city, stands on the spot where Guruji granted interview to a Muslim holy saint popularly known as Shaikh Darvesh. The saint blindfolded his eyes so that he could swear before the Mughal authorities that he had not seen the Guru.

 

 

Pushpa Gujral Science City :-

Science City is being built with its aim of learning, fun & amusement out of Science for people of all ages & all walks of life. It will arouse creativity in young minds, help in building a scientific temper in the state. The project will be dynamic in its concept, as to adapt to the rapidly developing modern technology to the main objective of this project are: To create awareness of science in the community etc.

 

 

 

Wonder Land:-

Wonderland Theme Park is an amusement water park with water games and water rides. The Park spreads over 11 acres with many hrilling rides offering healthy entertainment to all age groups. The park is located about 6 kms from Jalandhar Bus terminus and 8 kms from the Railway Station on Nakodar Road . The water rides includes bumper cars, flying jets, horror house, boating, kiddies’ boating, play house, flying dragon and a slide splash.

 

 

Singh Sabha Gurdwara-Model Town:-

This Gurdwara came into existence back in early 1950’s as a Sikh worship place & expanded to a huge building afterwards. Sikh festivals are occasions for Sikhs to rededicate themselves to the Faith. Every year, large number of devotees from all walks of life celebrate major Sikh festivals like Gurupurab (Guru’s Remembrance Day), Baisakhi, Diwali and other important days together at this Gurdwara. S. Chanan Singh was the first President of this Gurdwara, who with the help of other Sikh families like S.Kundan Singh Sandhu started this Gurdwara.

 

Geeta/Gita Mandir:-

This Mandir is situated in Model Town, close to Nikku Park. Not sure about its history but this Mandir has been at the same place since 1960’s. Large number of devotees pay obeisance at the Geeta Mandir in Model Town on the occasion of Janmashtami in Jalandhar. If you are going to Nikku Park, do not miss visiting Model Town Gurudwara & Geeta Mandir.

 

 

SHOPPING:-
Jalandhar is very famous for the handicrafts and handlooms and it is better to go for old and city markets rather than those malls for all these things.

FOOD:-
The cuisines are very simple and cooked with much love. The food is mostly prepared in desi ghee and the sweets like ladoos and pinnis are very famous. One should eat the local flavor and go for stuffed parathas, halwas, sarson ka saag, etc.
