Tehri Garhwal

Tehri Garhwal is one of the largest districts in the hill state of Uttarakhand, India. Its administrative headquarters is at New Tehri. The district has a population of 604,747 (2001 census), a 16.15% increase over the previous decade. It is surrounded by Rudraprayag District in the east, Dehradun District in the west, Uttarkashi District in the north, and Pauri Garhwal District in the south.

Prior to 888 AD, the region was divided into 52 garhs which were ruled by independent kings. These garhs were brought into one province by Kanakpal, the prince of Malwa. Kanakpal, on his visit to Badrinath, had met the then mightiest king Bhanu Pratap who later married his only daughter to the prince and handed over his kingdom to him. Kanakpal singh and his descendants gradually conquered all the garhs and ruled the whole of Garhwal Kingdom for the next 915 years, up to 1803.

The present king of Kumaon kingdom is Raja Mahendra Chand of Lamakhet, he is married to Rani Gita Chand of Rina and has three children’s (Rajkumari Aakanksha Chand, Rajkumari Mallika Chand, Rajkumar Aryan Chand).

 

HOW TO REACH

By Air:-
Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun is the nearest at a distance of 107 km. Flights from Delhi and Chandigarh operate to Dehradun. Taxis are available from Delhi to reach Tehri. However, many tourists prefer to travel to Tehri from Delhi (298 km) by road. Delhi is well connected to all the major parts of the country and most major cities across the world.

By Rail:-
Haridwar and Rishikesh are the nearest railway stations. Trains from Chennai, Delhi, Ajmer, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Mumbai, Amritsar, Dehradun, Gorakhpur, Kolkata, Jammu, Indore, Rishikesh, Okha, Varanasi, Ujjain, Puri, etc. connect to Haridwar. Rishikesh is connected by trains to Jammu, Delhi, Kotdwar and Dehradun. Taxis are available from Haridwar as well as Rishikesh to any part of Tehri.

By Road:-
Tehri is well connected by road to most parts of Uttarakhand. Public and private buses from different parts of the state, Delhi and Chandigarh ply to Tehri.

 

WHAT TO SEE

Chamba:-

Chamba is one of the main attractions located at a distance of about 18 km from Tehri Garhwal. Chamba, which lies at an altitude of about 1676 m above the sea level, is a popular hill station surrounded by dense pine and deodar trees.

Chamba is famous for its scenic locations and clear views of Garhwal ranges of Himalayas and River Bhagirathi.

 

 

 

Uttarkashi:-

uttarashiUttarkashi is a popular destination for tourists visiting Tehri Garhwal District of Uttrakhand. Uttarkashi, which lies at an altitude of 1352 m above sea level, is a scenic destination situated on the banks of holy River Bhagirathi, at a distance of 78 km from Tehri town.

 

 

 

 

Badrinath:-

badrinathBadrinath is a must-visit destination for tourists visiting Tehri-Garhwal District of Uttarakhand state. It is also one of the destinations of the Char Dham pilgrimage, the others being Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath.

Tehri dam:-

Khatling Glacier:-

Khatling GlacierKhatling Glacier is a popular destination for tourists visiting Tehri Garhwal District of Uttrakhand. Khatling Glacier is a massive lateral glacier situated nearby Tehri town, at the source of the River Bhilangana. This glacier is also a popular trekking destination from Ghuttu, situated about 62km from Tehri.

 

 

 

SHOPPING:-
There are various shopping options in Tehri. From small street stalls to bustling bazaars, shoppers can find a wide range of places to shop from. In Haridwar, one can shop for rudraksh, Gangajali (vessels containing Ganga water), pickles, kumkum (vermillion), ayurvedic medicine and precious stones. Winter clothes and beautifully knit kurtas and salwar kameez are a specialty of this region. Tourists will also love to shop for handicraft items made of shells, pearls and beads that are other attractions.

FOOD:-
There are innumerable eating options in Tehri. However, most parts of Tehri serves only vegetarian food. There aren’t too many fancy restaurants. However, small restaurants serve delicious local and other Indian cuisines.Restaurants attached to hotels serve multi-cuisine delicacies.
