Uttarakhashi

The town of Uttarkashi is considered as the Kashi of the North (Uttar). It is also known to be the abode of gods and goddesses because, just like Kashi, there are many temples dedicated to various gods and goddesses.There are over 30 temples in the town. Thousands of devotees come here during the occasion of ‘Magh Mela’ to take a holy dip along with their local deities in the waters of the Bhagirathi.

 

How to reach

By Air:-
The town of Uttarkashi can be easily reached by buses, trains or flights. Travelers who are planning to reach the city via airways can easily reach the city as the nearest airport is located in Dehradun. The airport is located near the city and then one can further take a taxi to reach Uttarkashi.

By Road:-
Roadways is considered as the best option to reach the city as there are a large number of buses which are locally preferred mode of transport. Frequent buses are available to main cities like Dehradun (187 km), Haridwar (171 km), Rishikesh (151 km) and also Mussoorie (165 km) and many others.

By Train:-
Train is another one of the major transport which offers frequent services to its customers. Uttarkashi has its nearest railway station at Rishikesh/Haridwa and then further one can take taxi or bus to reach the city.

WHAT O SEE

 

Gangotri:-

gangotriThe temple of Gangotri is located at a height of 3200 m above sea level. It is 100 km from Uttarkashi and was established in the 18th century by General Amar Singh Thapa, on the banks of the Bhagirathi. It is very popular among pilgrims. Quite a number of ashrams have come up on various sites which offer decent accommodation. Some of the nearby places that can be visited are Kedarkund, Gaurikund and Patangna.

 

 

 

Yamunotri:-

yamunotriLocated at a height of 3235 meters above sea level, Yamunotri is one of the four important pilgrimages or ‘Four Dhams’ in Uttarakhand. The main source of River Yamuna, the shrine of Yamunotri is located opposite to Gangotri and the road divides and leads to Yamunotri from Dharasu, which is located between Rishikesh and Uttarkashi.

The actual source of the river lies still 1 km from here, at a height of 4421 meters. Since the way to the source is quite difficult to climb, most pilgrims and devotees offer puja at the temple. The temple has hot springs beside it.

 

Vishwanath:-

vishwanathDevoted to Lord Shiva, the Vishwanath Temple is situated around 300 m away from Uttarkashi’s local bus stand. This temple received a new look after its renovation in 1857 by Sudarshan Shah’s wife, Maharani Khaneti. The temple has a Shivling, 90 cm wide and 60 cm high. It is a very famous spot for visitors to Gangotri, Uttarkashi and Yamunotri.

 

 

 

Harsil:-

harshilHarsil is a tiny village in the Bhagirathi valley. It is around 72 km from Uttarkashi and is situated along the highway that leads to Gangotri. It is situated at a height of 2623 m and is known for its apples and natural surroundings. Accommodation facilities are available in the form of forest rest houses and bungalows.

 

 

 

Gaumukh:-

gurumukhThe main source of the Ganga or the Bhagirathi River is the Gaumukh glacier. This is the main reason a large number of devotees visit this place to take a dip in the ice cold water. It is 18 km from Gangotri and the trek to Gaumukh from Gangotri is easy.

 

 

 

 

Dodital:-

doditalDodital is situated at a height of 3307 m. The attraction of this lake is its crystal clear water surrounded by dense forests. Fishing can be done here with permits from the Divisional Forest Officer of Uttarkashi. Himalayan trouts are found here in abundance.

Dodital can be reached from Uttarkashi by road and by trekking. A trek of 16 km from Angoda leads to Dodital. Lodging facilities are available by the lake. Tourists can easily trek down to Yamunotri and Hanuman Chatti from this spot.
