Bokaro district is one of the most industrialized zone in India. It is one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state, India. It was established in 1991 by carving out one subdivision consisting of two blocks from Dhanbad District and six blocks from Giridih District. Bokaro Steel City is the district headquarters. The district has a population of about 2 million (2011 census). Bokaro is famous for its Steel Plant which is the biggest in Asia. It is the fourth integrated public sector steel plant in India built with Soviet help. It also famous for its quality educational system. Besides,it is also a popular tourist destination for people from Eastern Region and also foreigners. Bokaro houses companies like Steel Authority of India, Bharat Refractories Limited, Hindustan Steelworks Construction Limited, Damodar Valley Corporation, subsidiaries of Coal India Limited, Electrosteel Castings Limited, Bokaro Power Supply Company Pvt. Limited (BPSCL), Indian Explosive Limited, Jaypee Group, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and many more. Some big corporates are also setting up there industries here, such as – ArcelorMittal 12ml/t steel plant, Posco 3ml/t steel plant and SAIL greenfield steel plant of 12 ml/t are coming soon around the city.
HOW TO REACH
By Air:-
Birsa Munda Airport is the nearest airport to the city which is about 84 km away. You can hire car, taxi or bus to reach here. Flights take you to your desired destination with the frequent services. Domestic flights connect this airport to various different destinations. This airport is well maintained and provides best possible amenities to the passengers. Dhanbad Airport and Burnpur Airport are also situated near the city.
By Road:-
Roads are well connected to the major cities and states. Private and public buses are available from the city bus stand. You can also hire a rental taxi to reach your desired destination very easily. Dhanbad (52 km), Patna (324 km) and Tatanagar (151 km) are well connected to Bokaro.
By Train:-
Bokaro railway station is the convenient way to reach the city or move to another city. You can get many trains as these are frequent and connect with various cities and states.
WHAT TO SEE
Chas:-
Chas served as the administrative headquarters of Bokaro during the time when the city was part of the district of Dhanbad. Later, Bokaro itself was designated the status of a district and headquarters was shifted to the Steel Township. Tourists visiting Chas can spend time at the popular attractions within the destination, namely Bhootnath Mandir, Joda Mandir and Check Post.
Jagannath Temple:-
Jagannath Temple in the Bokaro Steel City is a popular tourist attraction, which looks exactly like the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orrisa. The temple has been recently constructed by the Bokaro Steel Plant Management and has become a prominent place, where devotees come to pray to Lord Jagannath.This place is famous among locals and tourists for its beautiful architecture and peaceful ambience. Every day, aarti is done in the mandir, near dusk. Tourists often visit the temple for the famous Rath Yatra, which is arranged once a year.
Kali Mandir:-
Kali Mandir, popular temple situated in Sector-5, is dedicated to goddess Kali, who is personification of power. Apart from being the holy premises, the temple serves as a socialising centre for Bengalis residing in Bokaro Steel City. An annual painting competition is organised in this temple, which is attended by many school students of the city.
City Park:-
City Park is situated in Sector 3 of the city of Bokaro. The park has an artificial lake, which is thronged by visitors especially on weekends for picnic. The lake also has three Japanese styled artificial islands. There is also a small guest house and a restaurant near the lake, which is visited by tourists coming to the park. In addition to this, a small beautiful park was opened on 1st January 2007 to further add to the beauty of the City Park. The park also hosts Basant Mela in the month of February every year, attracting several tourists
Siwandih:-
Siwandih is a tourist attraction located near Garga Dam, which is inhabited by natives of Bihar working in the steel plant. The place is home to two popular mosques, one in Millat Nagar and other in Azad Nagar. Moreover, tourists visiting this place also head towards the popular nearby places, such as Islampur, Bansgora, Makhdumpur and Haisabatu.
Ram Mandir:-
Ram Mandir at Bokaro is managed by the Shree Ram Mandir Trust, which organises around 250 marriages of the poor people, every year at low cost. The temple was constructed in the year 1967 by labour leader Pt. Parma Nand Tripathi.The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama, but also has various small temples of Radha Krishna Mandir, Hanuman Mandir and many more. There are also Lord Venkateshwar Mandir, Kali Mandir, Sheetala Mandir and Shiva Mandir located within the premises. The temple also houses a rishi niwas and a holy library.
Bokaro Ispat Pustakalaya:-
Bokaro Ispat Pustakalaya is managed by the Bokaro Steel Plant. This library features collection of over 40,000 books mainly comprising manuscripts. Located near the Bokaro Hotel tourists can reach the attraction through auto rickshaws or taxis that are easily available in different parts of the city.
